The concept of Vinegar Tasters is a traditional motif in Chinese art. It demonstrates the tension and conflict between the three major philosophical strands of Chinese theology, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. The three men in the paintings are Confucius, Buddha, and Laozi, all dipping into a vinegar pot to taste its contents; the first has a sour expression, symbolizing how Confucianism needs rules to correct the degeneration of people; the second looks bitter, as Buddhism sees life as beset by pain and suffering; the third is smiling, because Taoism views existence as fundamentally good. All of this may seem like a needlessly convoluted introduction to the story of a shiny red Audi A4, but there are clear parallels to be drawn here. The three perspectives on life put forward by the Vinegar Tasters are clearly mirrored in the UK show scene today – some people are cynical and keen to talk down the perceived flaws in other people’s builds, others are bitter about how they feel the lifestyle is slipping ever further from its glory days, while some – like Adam Waggott – are simply happy to be involved, and not especially bothered by other people’s snidey cynicism. Ideologically skipping across the East China Sea to Japan, we also find oriental influences in Adam’s A4 build to titillate and amuse (or horrify, depending on individual perspective)... the fitment of Bride seats and Takata harnesses is more of a JDM thing, something you’d expect to find in our sister mag Banzai rather than within these pages, but who says there has to be a rule book? Adam’s just enjoying his life, and other folks’ quibbles about his choices don’t matter a damn.

He’s certainly been around for long enough not to Above Carbon fiber engine cover tidies up the bay a treat.be too worried about impressing people. “I’ve been into car modifying since the old days of sticking red-tops in Novas,” Adam assures us. “It was all part of the early Fast Car and Max Power era, all big body kits and over-the-top styling.” It’s fair to say that his proclivities have mellowed somewhat over the years, although once that fire for oœ  eats builds is burning within your soul, it can never be truly extinguished. Adam was keen to build a tasteful and classy B6 A4 with an OEM vibe, but he simply couldn’t resist adding a few deliberately jarring modifications to really make it his own. Because where’s the fun in putting together a car the same as countless others on the scene?“I’d always wanted to build an A4, and this particular B6 stood out as it was the perfect color – Misano Red – with the Votex kit,” he continues. “The engine and everything else was totally standard, and it seemed to be a really good base for a project.”

The car was found on eBay, all complete but with a few minor niggles which would need rectifying; the dreaded lacquer peel was present all over the boot lid and rear bumper, and there was also a long crease in the bonnet, but the good points far outweighed the bad. This was a blank canvas, something Adam could build up from scratch to the vision in his head rather than having to rework or undo someone else’s efforts. A clean slate.“The build was never actually meant to go as far as it has,” he laughs. Sure, heard that one before. “When I got the car, it was just going to be daily with some nice wheels and coil overs... but once I’d done that, I decided to get all the bodywork repainted in its original Misano Red, and at the same time I had the bonnet and rear spoiler covered in a holographic metal flake. And then I got the bug for air...”

There’s an amusing clash of ideologies at play here, with the Taoist enthusiasm for simply doing what makes you happy blending with the Confucianist desire to rectify perceived issues, and it’s this melange of concepts that drove Adam and his friend Simon to fit an AirREX air-ride system to the A4 – on the driveway, in November. Yep, there’s the Buddhist element sneaking in. Life is beset by pain and tribulations. “It was so cold!” he remembers, with a faint tremor of horror. “We managed to get it all fitted within a day, but yeah – if I were to do it again, it’s probably more of a summer job.”

A further challenge presented itself when it came to selecting the wheels to fill those newly tarmac-adjacent arches because Adam is a self-confessed wheel obsessive and this was always going to be a far more complex affair than simply plucking something off the shelf and moving on. “The car has had six different sets of wheels so far,” he grins, “and these Rotiforms are the best by far for fitment and looks. That was my biggest hurdle in the build really, trying to get the best look and fitment for the car while also being different from what everybody else was doing.”It’s this quest for differentness that led to the decision to fit a pair of Bride seats and Takata harnesses in the front, echoing the vibe with reed mats and retrimming the rear bench and door cards in Alcantara in a cunning effort to accentuate the outlandish JDM buckets. “I did this as I really didn’t want to follow the OEM look too closely, I like to cause a bit of controversy and these seats definitely did that!” says Adam. “The amount of people who comment on that is huge, and it’s all been really positive – it’s not something you normally see in the VAG scene, but I do like certain JDM mods so I thought ‘Why not bring the two together?’”

Why not, indeed? It certainly adds a frisson of specialness, as does the fact that Adam’s next obsession was with carbon fiber: you’ll find the lightweight weave making up the engine covers, scuttle panels, window pillars and throughout the interior. It all speaks of a street-race vibe, so naturally, the power needed to be tackled a little to suit. That trusty 1.8T has been treated to a meaty RamAir cone and a full custom exhaust system with decat and twin 4” tails, as well as a robust session of remapping. “It’s running a safe 270bhp,” Adam elaborates. “I didn’t want to go for silly power as I wanted it to still be eŽ  client and reliable for traveling to shows. It’s still more than fast enough for me, and has the ability to surprise a lot of people!
“I built the whole car from standard, with a little help along the way, and I had a vision of how I wanted it to look,” he continues. “The over-arching theme was ‘aggressive, but classy’, and to be one of best B6s in the UK... and I think we’ve pulled it o! It’s been hard work, and at times I’ve wanted to give up, but it’s all been worth it. Every time I get in the car I always get a big fat smile on my face; the way it sounds and how it looks, I’d say it’s the ideal combination.” And that, in essence, is the perfect vinegar-taster viewpoint: the Buddhist notion of wading through problems, the Confucianist despair at seeking solutions, but overall the Taoist joy of creating something simple to make oneself happy. Adam’s built a Euro ride with an oriental flavor and, against the odds, it’s a wonderfully life-aˆ  ring.
