BMW x3 and x4 comparison
BMW X3 AND X4 MODELS ARE NOW MORE DYNAMIC THAN EVER
The M badge used to be reserved for BMW’s most track-focused motorsport models. As customer demands have changed, however, BMW was forced to sprinkle this magic across the product line-up, including its SUV models. SUVs now make up about half of all M cars sold so it is no surprise BMW is continually expanding this barrage of high-riding performance models.BMW used the recent M Festival at Kyalami to launch the first X3M and X4M models and these high-performance models will be available only in Competition specification in South Africa. Under the bonnet is a newly developed six-cylinder in-line engine that features M TwinPower Turbo technology with two turbochargers, allowing it to produce 375kW and 600Nm.
Power is delivered via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and model-specific M xDrive all-wheel drive with rear-biased set-up and two selectable modes. The interplay between M xDrive, dynamic stability control, and the Active M Differential at the rear optimizes traction, agility, and directional stability. The chassis has received a number of upgrades to cope with the new engine. Both models are equipped with M-specific suspension with electronically controlled dampers and M-specific kinematics and elasto-kinematics for the front and rear axle. M-specific steering ensures great feedback to the driver and M-specific brakes ensure great stopping power.BMW claims these models can sprint from a standstill to 100km/h in just 4.1 seconds.
Around Kyalami, they were exceptionally quick and it is incredible to think that a car capable of lapping a racetrack at this pace also has the ground clearance and drivetrain to tackle gravel roads. It is truly a diverse sports car in an SUV body. Signature M design features include particularly large air intakes in the front apron, air breathers with integral M gills, M-specific-design for the exterior mirrors, rear apron, roof spoiler, 21-inch M light-alloy wheels, an M Sport exhaust system.
Inside, the M groceries are just as evident with a specific instrument cluster, steering wheel, gearshift paddles, and M buttons while bucket seat-style sport seats covered in Merino leather upholstery are standard fitment in these Competitions models.
BMW’S X6 UPDATED
BMW’s large SUV and the founding member of the Sports Activity CoupĂ© category have also been refreshed. The exterior dimensions are slightly stretched in all directions while a crisp design language emphasizes the sporty and luxurious character of the new X6. The large BMW kidney grille is illuminated for the first time while a dynamic roofline and sharp character line soften the previous hunchback look, replacing it with that of an athletic silhouette featuring powerful shoulders. X-shaped elements inside the twin headlights split up the lenses, adding further dynamic accents. LED headlights are now standard fitment.
Inside, a new arrangement and design of the control elements result in a progressive reinterpretation of the cockpit’s customary BMW driver focus. BMW Live Cockpit Professional including BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and two 12.3-inch displays plus a user interface with extended functions is now standard fitment. The range of driver assistance has also been extended significantly. The new BMW X6 is to be launched with a choice of four engines, six-cylinder petrol, six-cylinder diesel, and V8 petrol engines with outputs ranging from 195kW to 390kW.
An eight-speed Steptronic transmission and xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive is standard fitment. An optional offroad package is available features two-axle air suspension, frontal under guard protection, and electronically controlled rear differential lock, as well as special graphics in the instrument cluster and control display. Four modes are available to optimize the vehicle’s set-up for driving over snow, sand, gravel, or rocks.
